Jenny Chase gave up being a young golf pro to marry Roger. Then Roger turned out to be a real dominating jerk so the divorced him. Jenny is now a single mother and is trying to resume her pro golf career. Her current job as assistant pro at the Harbor Terrace Country Club has her well on her way. She recently qualified for the Women’s U.S. Open. When she discovers Rick Gilbert, the club groundskeeper hanging from the rafter in the cart barn things might change for Jenny.

The local police are quick to rule the death a suicide but Jenny is not too sure. When she finds out later that Rick had tried to call her five times on the night before she found the body her doubt goes even deeper. Rick’s wife reveals that Rick received a suspicious letter just before his death. She does not believe Rick would ever kill himself and leave her alone with their autistic child. On top of her other problems she recently found that Rick’s insurance policy of $ 2 million will not be paid out by the insurance company as the policy contained a suicide clause. Unless the police can be convinced to re-examine the death as something other than suicide she will not get anything. Jenny decides that she must help change the minds of the police.

As Jenny digs into things to find out if there may have been foul play her life gets more complicated. Her son is arrested for breaking and entering the golf clubhouse and vandalizing the vending machines. His juvenile hearing results in a 6 months probation period during which he must not get into trouble. So, Jenny institutes a strict monitoring plan that her son does not much like but which he reluctantly follows. Jenny fears for her son and she fears she may lose custody to her jerk husband as a result of these legal problems.

When she gets close to solving the mystery and identifying the killer she finds her own life in danger. In a dramatic last chapter Jenny is almost killed. Read “Where it Lies” to find out who done it. This is a fine story and earns a 7 of 10 on the Weaver meter.

Enjoy, Sid
