Scott and Katie's lives are turned upside down as they find themselves in an intense interaction with the FBI and local police. These parent's worst nightmare begins and will go on for over a week. On top of losing two of their three triplets the remaining child can't stand the emotional pressure and the unforgiving guilt of being the child who did not get taken goes into a catatonic coma.

"Chet" is a big dog. "Chet the Jet" as he is sometimes called is instrumental in catching "perps" working for Bernie Little of "Little's Detective Agency". Chet is good at smelling out and leading Bernie to all the right places to catch crooks. This story is written from Chet's point of view. Chet very often cannot figure out what humans mean when they say things like "Spit it out" and "spill your guts". Chet looks for a disgusting wad of tobacco spit or some one's internal organs to burst out onto the ground. Of course that doesn't happen and Chet is able to get on with his detective work for Bernie in spite of the difficult human language.

Sookie Stackhouse is a pretty young lady with a disability. Sookie hears what other people are thinking. Now you might think that would be a useful and fun thing but if you think about it you might agree with Sookie that it is a real pain in the behind (or the mind...). Hearing a constant cacophony of thoughts from everyone around you can be very distracting. Also it can be somewhat irritating to hear what some are thinking; especially when it is a young man who is thinking about getting you into bed, admiring all your body parts. Yuck!

A scientific expedition somewhere in the Jungles of South America is almost completely wiped out. One of the survivors gets away to tell the tale of the entire team being attacked from the trees by terrible ravenous creatures thirsting for their blood. The do not just kill but they drink human blood. They discover that some of the people who are not killed become infected by a sort of virus that transforms them into a super strong blood seeking vampire also.

Protesters group together angrily in Tamarack County, Minnesota when the US Government Department of Energy decides that it might be a good idea to store spent nuclear waste deep in the old iron mines in the Vermillion Mountains. It seems a safe place since the geology is very stable, there are no earthquakes and little chance of erosion into ground water. But the folks in town and on the Indian reservation do not want nuclear waste in their backyards.
